台中市長胡志強是否連任？一直是政壇關注的焦點。胡志強20日正式透過中市新聞局長石靜文，表示自己會在12月宣布答案；若沒有對外宣布，就表示自己將投入選戰、尋求連任。
媒體報導，胡志強上星期在自家與總統馬英九會面，儘管雙方否認傳言，但消息指出馬英九已決定，將繼續讓胡志強批戰袍、競選台中市長；而胡志強本人雖健康方面有疑慮，但仍有相當高的意願，雙方已達成初步共識。
面對傳言，胡志強20日透過石靜文表示，對自己幾乎已決定連任的說法不回應，目前尚未決定是否投入選戰。但自己若決定不參選，會在12月對外宣布，沒宣布的話就是選擇競選連任。
儘管如此，胡志強方面認為，若黨內其他人有意願、就一定要經過初選，他一定會參加並支持最後代表國民黨的候選人。
目前國民黨有意角逐中市長寶座的人不少，除了立委盧秀燕、蔡錦隆，還包括彰化縣長卓伯源。
日前胡志強最貼身幕僚、台中市副市長黃國榮，對胡志強參選表示樂觀，認為機率絕對超過50%。20日他接受媒體訪問，仍維持同樣的說法。
至於民進黨方面，除了日前自行宣布的立委蔡其昌，還有深耕台中多年的林佳龍，上次落敗的蘇嘉全雖然尚未表態，但也被綠營視為一大熱門人選。
